Toxic Skincare Ingredients to Avoid

Secrets are lurking in everyday products. The breakdown of bad skincare ingredients seems never-ending, but that’s why we stick to all-natural formulas. Keep reading for a list of basic skincare ingredients to avoid.

Top 7 Ingredients to Avoid in Skincare

Just because something’s green doesn’t mean it’s clean. Packaging can be designed to mislead in different ways. The good news is that all-natural formulas do great work. You just have to review the fine print.

Curious to explore bad skincare ingredients? You should be! Thousands of dangerous toxins exist on the market. For now, let’s break down seven sinful ingredients to avoid in skincare. The big NO’s for us are:

Aluminum
Health concerns go back to the 1960s and 1970s, linking to both Alzheimer’s Disease and Breast Cancer. Often found in antiperspirants, there’s been a shift to aluminum-free products in recent years, from mega–giants like Dove and Suave to popular all–natural brands such as Megababe, NATIVE, and Nécessaire.

Sustainably–sourced ingredients are at the core of our business, including a whole body collection completely free of artificial toxins. Think of it this way: If we can minimize our footprint, it maximizes the benefits you see from our products. That’s what we call a win-win!

Parabens
Parabens = big yikes. In bathrooms since the 1920s, these endocrine disruptors are used to extend the shelf lives of cosmetic products, most commonly shampoo, face cleanser, body wash, body lotion, and foundation. Don’t take your chances. Not always labeled, these chemicals are typically measured in small quantities but cause major ecological and human health risks. Side effects range from skin irritation to Breast Cancer, making parabens banned in personal care products by major retailers like Whole Foods Market and Target. Important skincare ingredients to avoid, be on the lookout for Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Polyparaben, and Methylparaben, just to name a few.

Phthalates
Unfortunately like parabens, these popular plasticizers are known hormone disruptors. And guess what? Most of us are exposed to them COUNTLESS times every day. Especially women. Found in synthetic fragrances, phthalates are used to prevent painted nails from drying too brittle; form long-lasting holds without stiffness in hair, and help body lotion cling to the skin. Linked to female and male reproductive issues, its harmful side effects appear over time. Here’s the silver lining: you’ll never find phthalates in our products!

Sulfates
Even longer names exist, but they’re most often referred to as SLS or SLES. These chemical agents create a lathering effect when added to shampoo, body wash, and bubble bath formula. Although sulfates are technically considered safe, research shows slight contamination of the heavy-duty carcinogen 1,4 dioxane. Some consumers show no reaction, while others report irritation, dryness, and breakouts.

Sulfates compromise the skin barrier. Because we love all skin types, we skip the drama to concentrate on creating no–worry skincare for every complexion under the sun.

PEGS
Most cosmetic companies have eliminated dangerous impurities, but these chemical compounds are still found in thickeners and emulsifiers. PEGS pulse into the skin as penetration enhancers, causing side effects that range from mild irritation to hypersensitivity. Toxicity concerns are raised around the presence of ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane, which are important to avoid. Stay rest assured that all Sand & Sky products are 100% non-toxic, PEG, and petroleum-free.

Carbon Black
When reviewing eyeliner or mascara ingredients, watch out for acetylene black, channel black, furnace black, lamp black, and thermal black. Worrisome side effects like cancer and respiratory issues link back to this black pigmented powder, containing high levels of chemicals like mercury, sulfur, arsenic, and lead.

Silicones
Used to improve the visual appeal of cosmetics, silicon is also known to trap dirt, dead skin cells, and other pore-clogging ingredients. These synthetics are water-repelling and tricky to remove, so it’s really a no-go zone if you’re pimple-prone. Often found in serums and facial moisturizers, silicon-based products can leave the pores extra clogged, especially if you’re bad about cleansing. Stay away!

How can you determine what’s safe from the throw–away pile? Stay on top of research, and consult Google when in doubt. If allergies or irritations persist, make a trip to the dermatologist ASAP. Reactions to bad skincare ingredients range in severity, involving symptoms like:

  • Burning
  • Blisters
  • Rash
  • Redness
  • Itching
